Elroy McKendree Avery

The man behind New Port Richey's planned community

Elroy McKendree Avery (1844–1935) was a Civil War veteran, politician, and entrepreneur who founded New Port Richey in 1924. Born in Erie, Michigan, Avery had a vision of creating a planned winter resort community that would attract visitors from across the United States.

Avery's careful planning included wide boulevards, parks, and the magnificent Hacienda Hotel. His book The Genesis of New Port Richey, published in September 1924, documents the early development and his vision for the community.

  1. 1859–1880s

    Early Settlement

    The area was originally inhabited by Tocobaga Indians and appeared on Florida maps as Pittitochoscolee. During the Civil War, salt works operated in the region.

    City Founded

    New Port Richey was founded by Elroy McKendree Avery, a Civil War veteran and entrepreneur who envisioned a planned winter resort community.

  3. 1925–1927

    The Hacienda Hotel Era

    Construction began on the iconic Hacienda Hotel in 1925. Opening in 1927 as a 100-room luxury hotel and country club, it drew socialites and celebrities.
