The Visionary
The man behind New Port Richey's planned community
Elroy McKendree Avery (1844–1935) was a Civil War veteran, politician, and entrepreneur who founded New Port Richey in 1924. Born in Erie, Michigan, Avery had a vision of creating a planned winter resort community that would attract visitors from across the United States.
Avery's careful planning included wide boulevards, parks, and the magnificent Hacienda Hotel. His book The Genesis of New Port Richey, published in September 1924, documents the early development and his vision for the community.
